Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

Austin’s Martin Luther King Day Celebration, planned by the Austin Heritage Council, is one of the country’s largest MLK celebrations, drawing over 15,000 people each year that continue to seek reconciliation and progress for all people in the Austin community.

Austin’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration began in 1983, and was planned and sponsored by the Texas Union African-American Culture Committee (AACC), at U.T. In 1993, AACC joined with Huston-Tillotson College and in 1994, the two colleges worked with community-based service organizations giving birth to the first City-Wide MLK Celebration.
